THE VICKERS EDGED OUT BY HYTHE TOWN

VCD ATHLETIC 1 HYTHE TOWN 2

The Vickers really should have got something out of this game with little to choose between the two sides, but they presented chances to the visitors who accepted them gratefully, taking the points in a 2-1 victory. The first half lacked sparkle despite a lot of endeavour from both sides, and although chances were created a lack of a cutting edge saw the first period end goalless. Steve Carvell tested visiting keeper Will Godman early on, before Hythe had their first chance of the match when a ball in from the right from Charlie Webster was met by the unmarked Dean Grant, but he could only send his header straight into the arms of Joe Mant. Then it was VCD’s turn again when Omar Lawson delivered into the box where a neat flick from Kemo Darboe set up Aymun El-Moyhalbel, but he snatched at the chance and dragged the ball wide. Webster then sent in a repeat ball to Dean Grant, but again the outcome was the same when he once more headed straight at Joe Mant. At the other end a ball forward was headed into the path of Steve Carvell by Kemo Darboe, but his well struck left foot effort went just over. For Hythe, Kieron Campbell delivered a high ball into the area, but it was not to be Dean Grant’s night as this time his free header sailed over the bar. The last chance of the half was Hythe’s as Ben Wilson drove a free kick straight at Joe Mant who held the ball comfortably. There was little between the teams up to this point with both sides probing, but some lacklustre finishing coupled with a poor final pass ensured that the half ended without score.
The second half started with Town on the attack and they had an immediate chance when Ryan Palmer got the ball out wide on the right from where he cut in and fired a low ball across the 6 yard box, but agonisingly just beyond the reach of his onrushing forwards. But it was only minutes later when Hythe took the lead when a deep corner was retrieved out wide and returned low into the area, and Sid Sollis shot towards the far post where Joe Mant, despite getting a hand to the ball could not prevent the goal. Just three minutes later it got worse for VCD when with men committed forward for a free kick, it was driven into the wall and cleared upfield where with the home players out of position Grant was able to take the ball forward without challenge, and he played in Sid Sollis who got his second goal of the evening when he shot low into the corner past Mant. The Vickers then began to up the tempo as they tried to retrieve the game with Kemo Darboe heading wide from Steve Carvell’s freekick when well placed. Then the Vickers were denied a nailed on penalty when Carvell found himself one on one with keeper Godman, and as he lifted the ball over him Godman crashed straight into him, taking him out of the game but, only he knows why, the referee deemed it a fair challenge despite the vociferous appeals from the VCD players. However, they got a lifeline shortly after when the ball was worked in from the right, finally reaching Steve Carvell, who cut inside his marker before sending the ball low past Godman. The Vickers now had their tails up and looked the better side as they sought an equaliser, but they missed a great chance when Carvell’s ball in from the left was only half cleared, but from a central position Derek Duncan shot wide of the inviting goal. VCD were pinning Hythe back deep in their own half but too often pumped balls forward that were easily dealt with by the visitors’ defence, and on a breakaway Hythe came close to adding a third when a ball down the line reached Grant whose snap shot was turned against the bar by the alert Joe Mant. VCD had one last chance in the final minute to salvage a point when substitute Rashid Kamara got through on goal, but Godman denied him with a fine block. A disappointing night for the Vickers where not for the first time this season sloppy defending has proved costly.
