DEFENSIVE LAPSES PROVE COSTLY FOR THE VICKERS

NORWICH UNITED 4 VCD ATHLETIC 1

On a dry bumpy pitch with an uncertain bounce, conditions were difficult for both sides to play football with neither able to play a passing game and the ball spending a lot of time in the air. The Vickers opened the brighter and took the game to Norwich keeping them deep as they probed for openings. A deep cross from the right was picked up by Jeffrey Imudia who fed Nick Symons, but his low drive went wide of a post. Then Victor Caicedo collected a ball forward before turning his man neatly, only to fire straight at keeper Andrew Wilton. A United corner was cleared upfield to Rashid Kamara who made ground before setting up Caicedo, but his low left foot effort was well saved by Wilton. The hosts were having most joy down the left where the impressive Tim Henery was causing problems, but the VCD defence denied them scoring opportunities with some excellent blocks and tackles. VCD came close to scoring when Imudia broke free down the left, making ground into the Norwich half before squaring to Rashid Kamara who stepped inside his marker before sending in a drive that came crashing back off the bar with Wilton stranded. On the half hour mark Norwich took the lead somewhat fortuitously when a cross driven in from the left cannoned off Imudia falling neatly into the path of Liam Jackson, who tried his luck from 25 yards sending the ball into the top corner out of the reach of Michael Gooch. Lee Mason and Nathan Stewart combined well in a promising move, but Stewart’s low drive was well saved by Gooch. Norwich then had a massive stroke of luck when a ball over the top sent Victor Caicedo clear and as he raced towards goal he neatly touched the ball over the advancing Wilton, only to be flattened by the keeper, leaving him prove on the ground. With everyone expecting a sending off for either dangerous play or denying a goal opportunity, the lenient referee issued only a caution. A lucky escape for the hosts. The last action of the half saw Rashid Kamara send a free kick narrowly over the angle.
The Vickers would have felt pleased with their first half performance but were undone shortly after the restart when a ball played for Tim Henery took a bad bounce that deceived the VCD defence, leaving him clear to make ground before slotting home. However VCD’s response was immediate when Jeffrey Imudia broke into the United half before playing in Frankie Sinclair on the flank who returned the ball, and without breaking stride Imudia fired past Wilton to give the Vickers a lifeline. VCD then went in search of an equaliser pressing deep in the home half and came close to levelling the score when a free kick was half cleared as far as Victor Caicedo who saw his low drive blocked on the line, and when the ball was retuned into the box, Daniel McCullock saw his glancing header go narrowly wide of the far post. The pressure was sustained but as the game entered the last quarter of an hour some slack defending proved costly as some poor decision making gifted the hosts two opportunities to go further ahead. Some dithering by the VCD defence on the bye line saw Nathan Stewart steal the ball before playing in Tim Henery who tucked it home from close in, then shortly after a ball over the top was gathered by Nicky Symons who had the opportunity to play back to keeper Gooch, but instead tried to clear with Stewart making a block and playing in Henery at the far post, where he completed one of the easiest hat-tricks that he will enjoy. The Vickers had a chance in the closing minutes to make the score look more respectable when Daniel McCullock sent Victor Caicedo clear where he touched the ball past the advancing Wilton, only for a defender to race back to clear off the line. After a promising start and playing well the Vickers will no doubt reflect on what could have been.
