Sat 23 Jan 15:00 - The Ryman Football League - Premier Division Full time Attendance 154

Having won eight of their last ten games, Enfield must have thought that another 3 points were comfortably available against a Vickers side still in the relegation zone, but such is this division that no games can be taken for granted, and an inspired, determined show by the hosts saw them collect a much needed win for the second time in 4 days. The visitors were on top in terms of possession, but VCD often threatened on the counter and with their defence well marshalled Town were often thwarted. Opening brightly, Enfield were quickly into their stride with the impressive Claudio Vilcu seeing his low drive turned behind at full stretch by Rob Budd, and then Harry Ottaway’s header set up Bobby Devyne to send the ball past Budd, but the effort was ruled offside. Getting into the game the Vickers opened their account in the 27th minute when Donavan Simmonds chased a ball forward causing indecision between Harold Joseph and keeper Nathan McDonald, and his persistence was rewarded when he got in front of Joseph to poke the ball low into the net. Town then had chances with Tyler Campbell shooting straight at Budd after a mazy run, and then Ottaway set up Corey Whitely but he dragged his effort wide when well placed. The Vickers doubled their lead with 5 minutes of the half remaining as Lheureux Menga collected Nathan Livings’ poor clearance and fed Ricky Sappleton, who neatly rounded McDonald to open his account for the club. The joy was short lived however when, straight from the kick off, Enfield won a corner and hesitation in the 6 yard box allowed Harold Joseph the chance to reduce the arrears. There was still a chance for VCD in the half when a corner was only half cleared but Simmonds volleyed inches over the bar.
The Vickers had the first chance of the second half as Simmonds broke down the right, playing in Lheureux Menga, but he pulled his shot wide, and then when VCD needlessly conceded possession in their own half, Bobby Devyne broke clear but Budd saved well low down. The visitors were beginning to enjoy greater possession with Campbell and Ottaway a constant threat, with the former seeing a great effort tipped round the post, but VCD had their moments and Ricky Sappleton went close when neatly turning his man and chipping McDonald, but his effort landed on top of the net with the keeper stranded. Whitely and Ottaway both had attempts denied by the inspired Budd, but with the game entering the last 15 minutes the visitors claimed a dubious equaliser when Ottaway, seemingly yards offside, headed the ball square over Budd where Harold Joseph touched it home. Town now sensed victory but it was the Vickers who had the last word when, in the closing minutes, Nigel Neita was too strong for Tyler Campbell on the half way line, and he raced forward to the edge of the area from where he sent a powerful left foot shot low into the corner past McDonald to seal the win. For the second time in 4 days VCD have scored 3 goals, collecting 6 points in the process, so we must hope that this could be the start of another good run.
