VCD ATHLETIC 3 WALTON CASUALS 2
The Vickers recorded their third successive win with a 3-2 victory over table toppers Walton Casuals in a closely contested game at Oakwood. Going 2-0 up in the first quarter things looked bright until Casuals reduced the arrears a minute into the second half, but a stunning goal from Rashid Kamara extended the lead before Walton scored their second approaching injury time. VCD started on the front foot and had a great chance as early as the 5th minute when Kemo Darboe’s pace took him past the visitors’ defence, but keeper Denzel Garrar came quickly off his line to block the ball to safety. Looking dangerous in attack the Vickers went ahead in the 9th minute when they hustled to win the ball with Steve Carvell sending Darboe clear again, and this time he made no mistake, drilling the ball home low for his 5th goal of the season. Walton responded with a ball in from the left to Isaac Sarpong who made space for a shot, but Joe Mant spread himself well to turn the ball round a post. Then the visitors thought they had claimed an equaliser when a ball was fired in from the left, going in off the far post, but an assistant’s flag indicated that a player was offside and impinging Joe Mant, and the effort was ruled out despite vociferous claims from the visitors’ bench. Casuals were finding space down the flanks, but a number of opportunities were lost by over-hit balls going out of play and not testing the home defence. VCD were looking the more likely and it came as no surprise when they doubled their lead with a fine goal. Carvell sent a long diagonal ball to Aymun El-Moyhalbel who took it in his stride before cutting inside Jack Battie, and drilling the ball into the far corner past Gerrar. The game was end to end with both teams playing their part but it was the Vickers that looked more composed, save for a loose ball that was pounced on by Luke Holness who sent in a snap shot that was well dealt with by Joe Mant.
From looking comfortably in control the Vickers were made to pay for some poor defending as Walton opened their account in the 47th minute. A long throw by Battie was allowed to bounce in the box, clearing the diminutive El-Moyhalbel, and as it fell loose Luke Holness drilled the ball home from a couple of yards. VCD then had a great chance from the restart to nullify the goal when a defensive error let in El-Moyhalbel, but Gerrar turned his effort away at full stretch to deny him. This inspired the visitors who then had their best spell of the game with skipper Daryl Coleman orchestrating some dangerous moves from midfield as they tried to level matters. They kept the Vickers on the back foot for a good spell as they sought an equaliser, but some excellent defending by the home back four, coupled with some wastefulness from Walton saw Joe Mant relatively untroubled in the home goal. As the game approached the last quarter, VCD scored a third goal to make things more comfortable. Substitute Rashid Kamara, just 2 minutes after coming onto the field, scored with a stunning strike after Omar Lawson chased down a ball out wide before cutting it back to Kamara, who drifted past 3 defenders and drove the ball home inside the keeper’s left hand post giving Gerrar no chance. Walton worked hard to try to close the gap as the minutes ticked by but had no luck until the final minute, when a headed clearance fell to Jack Battie who sent a first time volley over Joe Mant into the top corner. Sadly for the visitors it was too little too late as VCD were able to see out time to seal the points, which took them up to 7th in the table.
